Norway - SAS

This original Norwegian travel poster from 1962 promotes winter holidays and skiing in Norway. The photograph was taken at Skeikampen, one of Norway's best-known and oldest mountain resorts, with the distinctive snow-covered Skeikampen mountain rising dramatically behind the hotel and traditional buildings.

Two young women in colourful 1960s ski clothing dominate the foreground, creating a lively image of the rapidly developing Scandinavian ski holiday culture of the period. The combination of deep snow, mountain scenery and fashionable skiers presented Norway as an attractive winter destination to international travellers.

The poster was subsequently overprinted for use by Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS). The Norway and SAS lettering at the top and Scandinavian Airlines System across the bottom transformed the tourism image into an SAS destination poster, promoting the airline as the way to reach Norway and its winter resorts.

An interesting piece of information associated with this poster is that one of the young women pictured is said to have later worked for NRK, the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation.

A wonderful example of 1960s Norwegian ski and airline advertising, combining the history of SAS with the classic winter landscape of Skeikampen.

Condition: The poster has been folded and has visible fold marks. It has been professionally mounted on linen with an acid-free barrier for preservation.
