This vibrant mid-century Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) poster is one half of a larger two-sheet design, though it was also issued and displayed separately, making this the more commonly seen of the two panels.
Issued around 1956, and listed in International Poster Annual on January 1, 1957, it beautifully captures Copenhagen as an international crossroads in the new era of global air travel. The artwork combines a striking monochrome portrait of an SAS stewardess with a lively, colorful illustration of Copenhagen below. The scene features the Little Mermaid, the royal guards in their tall bearskin hats, Tivoli Gardens, a waiter carrying drinks, a cyclist, children with balloons, and a young couple enjoying the city. An SAS aircraft glides overhead, symbolizing the airline’s expanding intercontinental network.
The colors remain vibrant. A small piece of the upper right corner is missing, with otherwise only light handling wear.
A classic and charming SAS travel poster from the golden age of airline advertising.
