This delightful original Swedish poster was issued in 1953 to celebrate Stockholm’s 700th anniversary. Although the city technically reached its 700-year milestone in 1952, the celebrations were postponed by one year so as not to compete with international travel attention during the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games.
The poster was designed by Curt Blixt, who won the official anniversary poster competition with this charming composition titled “Mälardrottning” (“Queen of Lake Mälaren”). The design personifies Stockholm as a graceful female figure in a golden dress, holding theatrical and musical symbols, while the city’s landmarks, waterways, boats, and bridges unfold below her. The playful, modern style and rich colors make it a standout example of early-1950s Scandinavian graphic design.
The poster is in great condition, with light wear consistent with age and handling, and retains strong colors and excellent visual appeal.
