This rare and visually striking original poster was designed by Olle Hjortzberg for the 1912 Summer Olympics held in Stockholm.
The composition is a powerful example of early 20th-century Olympic imagery, blending classical ideals with modern graphic design. At the center stands a monumental nude male athlete, rendered in a sculptural, almost Greco-Roman style, symbolizing strength, unity, and physical excellence. Surrounding him are swirling ribbons and an array of international flags, emphasizing the global nature of the Games and the coming together of nations.
The dynamic movement of the flags and flowing forms creates a sense of energy and celebration, while the warm orange border and bold typography anchor the design. The Swedish text reads:
“Olympiska Spelen Stockholm 1912 – 29 Juni – 22 Juli”
(“Olympic Games Stockholm 1912 – June 29 to July 22”)
Hjortzberg’s design reflects the transition between Art Nouveau and early modernism, with decorative elements combined with strong, symbolic imagery. It is widely regarded as one of the most iconic and important early Olympic posters, representing the golden age of international exhibitions and sporting events.
Mounted on linen with rugged margins, but retaining excellent color and strong visual impact. A highly collectible and historically significant piece—rare and desirable among both Olympic and poster collectors.
