Ocean Liner |
This wonderful original vintage poster from 1948 was issued by the Norwegian America Line and beautifully illustrates Norway’s proud maritime heritage. Designed by Karl Dahl, a well-known Norwegian designer and art teacher, the composition links past and present through a striking visual narrative. In the foreground, a Viking longship rides the waves with its distinctive striped sail, while behind it sails the modern ocean liner MS Oslofjord, symbolizing the evolution of Norwegian seafaring from ancient exploration to transatlantic travel.
The dynamic sea, with rolling waves and circling seabirds, adds movement and atmosphere, while the clean horizon and soft sky provide balance. The contrast between the dark, stylized Viking ship and the bright, streamlined liner highlights both tradition and progress. Bold lettering reading “Den norske Amerikalinje” and “Norwegian America Line” anchors the lower section, reinforcing the company’s identity and international reach.
MS Oslofjord III, launched in 1948 in Amsterdam, carried 266 First Class and 359 Tourist Class passengers, representing post-war optimism and the revival of transatlantic passenger travel. This poster is a fine example of mid-century Scandinavian design, combining storytelling, national pride, and elegant graphic execution.
Mounted on linen, in very good condition. A tear at the top has been professionally and expertly repaired by paper conservators. Displays beautifully and would make a striking addition to any collection.
