This elegant original vintage travel poster from 1956 was designed by Erik Ölmebo and promotes Visby on the island of Gotland.
The composition is beautifully balanced and distinctly mid-century modern. A large seagull glides across the sky in the foreground, its wings spanning nearly the entire width of the image, creating a strong sense of movement and coastal atmosphere. Below, a small passenger ship approaches the harbor, leading the viewer’s eye toward the historic skyline of Visby, with its medieval towers, churches, and fortified walls rendered in simplified, stylized forms.
Visby itself is today recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its exceptionally well-preserved medieval town and city walls—an aspect already romanticized in this design. The poster captures the timeless appeal of Gotland as a Baltic destination rich in history, architecture, and maritime culture.
The color palette is soft yet striking—muted greens and blues contrasted with warm sandy tones and pale architectural highlights—giving the poster a calm, almost dreamlike quality. Ölmebo’s clean lines and geometric simplification reflect the Scandinavian modernist aesthetic of the 1950s.
Mounted on linen, the poster is in very good condition with repaired tear at top. Strong colors and an impressive display presence. A refined and highly decorative example of Swedish travel poster design, particularly appealing for collectors of Scandinavian modernism, coastal themes, and historic destinations.
