Ocean Liner |
An impressive original vintage Swedish Lloyd poster designed by Nicolai (Nic) G. Kowarsky (1900–1993). The artwork presents a dramatic bird’s-eye view of one of the company’s elegant passenger liners cutting through deep blue seas, accompanied by a soaring seagull in the foreground. Kowarsky’s masterful perspective and meticulous attention to detail convey both the scale of the vessel and the romance of sea travel during the golden age of ocean liners.
The poster promotes the Swedish Lloyd fleet, including the passenger ships Patricia, Saga, Suecia, and Britannia, which operated services between Gothenburg and London. These vessels were among the best-known ships on the route, providing comfortable passenger travel across the North Sea during the post-war era.
Born in Riga in the Russian Empire, Kowarsky grew up in Moscow before his family relocated to Berlin following the Russian Revolution of 1917. While studying at the Technical University, he worked as an automotive and menswear illustrator. He moved to Sweden in 1933, where he enjoyed a remarkably diverse career. He worked for leading department stores including Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) and PUB, designed footwear for Master, created automobile designs for General Motors, and produced advertising artwork for companies such as ABA and Ostermans Aero. For major Swedish shipping companies including Johnson Line and Wallenius, he created numerous ship illustrations, making maritime subjects one of his best-known specialties.
This expertise is clearly evident in the present poster, where the vessel is rendered with exceptional accuracy and elegance. The same image was later used in a Swedish Lloyd timetable issued in 1953, indicating that the design was one of the company’s most successful promotional images.
Kowarsky was also an active member of SAFFT (Svenska Affischtecknares Förening) and served as the association’s club master in 1952–53.
Minor wear. In great condition. A beautiful and increasingly difficult-to-find maritime poster, highly desirable for collectors of ocean liner, Swedish Lloyd, and Scandinavian travel advertising.
