A rare and highly decorative Swedish theatre poster advertising the comedy Nicklason & Co at Vanadislundens Teater in Stockholm. The production starred some of Sweden's most popular entertainers of the era, including Björn Hodell, Thor Modéen, and Dagmar Ebbesen. Written by Ernst Berge, with music by Helan and directed by Ludde Gentzell, the play was presented as a lively folk comedy with songs.
The poster was designed by Swedish illustrator and caricaturist Nils Melander, whose distinctive "NM" monogram appears in the artwork. Melander was a well-known newspaper artist and commercial illustrator, recognized for his humorous drawings and expressive caricatures. His playful graphic style is evident throughout the composition.
The design combines bold red and black typography with a charming cartoon illustration of a chauffeur and an elegantly dressed woman examining a small automobile overloaded with bottles and luggage. Humorous phrases scattered across the poster hint at the comic misunderstandings and light-hearted chaos of the production. The energetic layout and expressive drawing perfectly capture the spirit of Swedish popular theatre during the interwar period.
The poster shows age wear, tears, and some surface dirt consistent with its use and age. Nevertheless, it remains an attractive and increasingly scarce example of Swedish theatre poster art from the golden age of popular entertainment.
