This original vintage Cathay Pacific Airways travel poster from the 1970s promotes Japan through a dramatic photograph of the Nachi Fire Festival, also known as the Nachi-no-Ogi Matsuri. Held annually at Kumano Nachi Taisha in Wakayama, the festival features men in white ceremonial robes carrying enormous flaming torches to purify the route taken by the shrine's deities toward the sacred Nachi Falls.
The slogan, "Discover that Japan is more than Kobe and karate," reflects Cathay Pacific's playful advertising style, encouraging travelers to look beyond familiar stereotypes and experience Japan's ancient rituals and regional traditions. The intense flames, crowded procession, and dark background create a powerful image of one of Japan's most spectacular religious festivals.
A striking example of 1970s airline advertising, issued under Cathay Pacific's slogan "Hong Kong's discovery airline."
