This original vintage French railway travel poster, designed by Roland Hugon for SNCF (Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français), was issued in 1938 to promote overnight rail travel to the Côte d'Azur, France's celebrated Mediterranean coastline. With the evocative slogan "Ce soir dans le train... Demain matin Côte d'Azur" ("Tonight on the train... Tomorrow morning the French Riviera"), the poster captures the romance and convenience of traveling overnight by rail and waking up beside the Mediterranean.
Hugon's elegant composition invites the viewer to look through the window of a sleeping car, where the train window is framed like an ornate mirror opening onto a dream destination. Beyond the carriage lies a picturesque Riviera harbor with sailing yachts, palm trees, pastel-colored buildings, and the sparkling blue sea under a cloudless sky. The dramatic contrast between the deep blue interior of the compartment and the brilliant coastal landscape reinforces the sense of anticipation and escape, making this one of the most memorable French railway posters of the late 1930s.
Issued shortly after the formation of SNCF in 1938, the poster formed part of the French National Railways' ambitious campaign to promote leisure travel by train. It reflects the golden age of European railway advertising, when overnight services offered travelers a comfortable and elegant way to reach the French Riviera without the need for lengthy daytime journeys.
A highly desirable original vintage French railway poster, combining Roland Hugon's refined graphic style with the timeless appeal of the Côte d'Azur and the romance of classic rail travel.
Mounted on linen. The linen has been trimmed close to the poster edge, leaving approximately a 0.5 cm margin. In very good condition with light age wear.
