Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederland - Gibraltar

This original vintage Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederland (Netherland Line) travel poster from the 1930s was designed by British artist Bernard Rutt to advertise Mediterranean voyages from Amsterdam. The bold Dutch text promotes sailings to Gibraltar, Algiers, Palma, Villefranche (Nice) and Genoa.

Rutt created an exceptionally colorful Mediterranean scene with a towering palm tree, brilliant flowers, sunbathers beneath striped beach umbrellas, a sailing boat on deep blue water and a coastal town backed by dramatic mountains. The vivid colors and stylized composition capture the glamour of Mediterranean travel during the interwar period and make this a particularly decorative ocean liner poster.

The poster bears two Belgian tax stamps in the upper right corner, interesting evidence that this example was displayed or distributed in Belgium. Published for Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederland, also known internationally as the Netherland Line, this is an attractive example of 1930s shipping and travel advertising by Bernard Rutt.
