VR jubilee winter discount

This original vintage Finnish poster from 1962 was designed by Osmo K. Oksanen to promote the Christmas season winter fare campaign of the Finnish State Railways (VR). The text “Juhlavuoden talvialennus” refers to a jubilee winter discount, marking the 100th anniversary of VR, indicated by the dates 1862–1962 prominently displayed beside the railway emblem.

The design centers on a stylized steam locomotive chimney, rendered with expressive brushwork and subtle winter tones. Snow rests on the top of the engine while a small bullfinch perches quietly above, adding a charming seasonal touch that emphasizes the winter atmosphere. In the background, a train stretches across the composition, reinforcing the theme of railway travel and the importance of Finland’s rail network.

Osmo K. Oksanen was known for his distinctive graphic style that combined strong illustration with clear messaging, and this poster reflects the clean, modern aesthetics of Scandinavian design in the early 1960s.
