Chateau Tongariro is a New Zealand hotel and resort complex and was completed in 1929. It is located close to Whakapapa skifield on the slopes of Mount Ruapehu, and is close to three active volcanoes: Mt Tongariro, Mt Ruapehu (ejects frequent lahars), and Mt Ngauruhoe, which last erupted in 1975. Whitin the boundaries of Tongariro National Park, New Zealand's oldest.
The designer of the poster, Lovell-Smith, was an artist trained at the Canterbury College School of Art and in England.
