Designed by the celebrated Italian-French artist René Gruau (born Count Renato Zavagli Ricciardelli), this striking original vintage poster embodies the elegance, glamour, and effortless minimalism that define Gruau’s iconic style. One of the 20th century’s most influential fashion illustrators and poster designers, Gruau famously collaborated with Christian Dior, serving as artistic director for Dior’s advertising from 1947 and helping to shape the visual language of the brand’s “New Look.”
Probably issued in the late 1950s, this poster was created for the Compagnie Maritime des Chargeurs Réunis, promoting the romance and sophistication of luxury ocean travel. The artwork features a woman reclining in a vivid red deckchair, her face shaded by a wide yellow sunhat, set against stylized ship rails and a serene pale-blue sky. The bold color contrasts, dramatic silhouette, and fluid linework are quintessential Gruau.
This design is also referenced in the book La mer s'affiche, p.257, underscoring its importance within the history of maritime poster art.
