BOAC Atlantic Ocean Stratocruiser Speedbird

An exceptional and rare original lithographic poster designed by Abram Games, one of Britain’s most celebrated graphic designers, created in 1949 to promote BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation) transatlantic flights aboard the luxurious Boeing Stratocruiser.

Games’ bold and elegant design transforms a transatlantic map into a powerful visual metaphor — the Atlantic Ocean opens like a book between stylized depictions of Great Britain and the United States, linked by the iconic Speedbird emblem in red and blue. The composition perfectly expresses postwar optimism, technological progress, and international connection.

The Stratocruiser was famed for its unmatched comfort and innovation — featuring twin decks, full sleeper bunks, and a downstairs lounge, representing the pinnacle of air travel luxury in the late 1940s.

The Speedbird motif, introduced by BOAC’s predecessor Imperial Airways, remains in use today as British Airways’ call sign, making this design both a historic and enduring symbol of British aviation.
