A superb original SAS travel poster designed by Otto Nielsen in 1959, promoting flights to Italy. The composition depicts the famed Spanish Steps in Rome, viewed from Piazza di Spagna, with the Trinità dei Monti church rising at the top. Rendered in Nielsen’s distinctive painterly style, the poster captures both the vibrancy and romance of the Eternal City.
As with many of Nielsen’s SAS designs, a small airplane can be seen soaring above the cityscape, subtly reinforcing the airline’s global reach. Signed in the print by the artist, the work exemplifies the golden age of postwar airline posters, when bold color, fluid brushwork, and elegant typography were used to evoke the excitement of international travel.
This poster is among the most iconic of Nielsen’s SAS series, combining fine art sensibility with commercial elegance. A particularly desirable piece for collectors of airline and mid-century travel posters.
