An original authentic SAS (Scandinavian Airlines System) travel poster from 1955, designed by the celebrated Danish artist Otto Nielsen (1916–2000) to promote the airline's routes to Africa.
The poster features a graceful herd of giraffes rendered in Nielsen's distinctive painterly style. Set against a luminous yellow-green background, the animals dominate the composition while a small SAS aircraft soars overhead, elegantly linking the wildlife of Africa with the modern age of international air travel. The simplicity of the design, combined with Nielsen's confident brushwork and subtle use of color, creates an image that is both striking and memorable.
Otto Nielsen was one of SAS's most important and prolific poster artists, producing some of the airline's most iconic advertising imagery from the late 1940s through the 1970s. His posters helped define the visual identity of SAS during the golden age of air travel and remain highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
An interesting detail is that the same giraffe motif was also used in a 1955 SAS calendar, confirming its importance within the airline's promotional material of the period.
The poster captures the sense of adventure and exotic destinations that characterized post-war airline advertising, when Africa represented one of the most exciting long-distance destinations available to European travelers.
Although the poster shows some edge wear in the upper left margin, it remains in great condition. Professionally mounted on linen with an acid-free barrier for preservation.
