This rare and original vintage poster was crafted for the 1922 Swedish prohibition referendum, urging voters to "Think carefully if you want to undertake a prohibition experiment in our country at your own risk" and advising, "Think first - then vote no!"
The poster vividly illustrates prohibition as a menacing hydra hovering over Sweden, its body leading to various scourges such as smuggling and higher taxes.
The outcome of the referendum saw prohibition rejected, with 51% voting no and 49% voting yes. Reflecting a pattern seen in other countries with influential temperance movements, there was a notable gender divide, with 59% of women supporting prohibition.
In good condition, the poster exhibits some age wear, gold accents, and mended tears, preserving its historical significance. Framed, it would make a compelling display, offering a glimpse into the socio-political landscape of Sweden during the 1920s.
