This striking and original antique Swedish poster advertises the final installment—Part 4: “Döden på bålet” (“Death at the Stake”)—of the Danish silent epic Den flyvende Hollænder (The Flying Dutchman, 1920), directed by Emanuel Gregers and based on Frederick Marryat’s 1839 novel.
The design is a masterclass in expressionist poster art of the early 1920s. The dramatic use of color—deep indigo blues, fiery oranges, and stark black silhouettes—creates a chilling visual narrative that mirrors the film’s dark and supernatural themes. The figures, cloaked in shadow and fire, evoke a haunting and otherworldly presence, echoing the legend of the cursed ghost ship and its doomed crew.
Released in four parts in November 1920, each segment premiered weekly at Copenhagen's Vesterbro Theatre.
This Swedish-language poster was produced for showings by Svenska Filmkompaniet, and it’s dated 1922, aligning with the film’s international release following its Danish debut.
It’s in very good condition—especially rare for a piece over a century old—and would indeed make a dramatic and atmospheric addition to any wall. An exceptional example of Scandinavian silent film history and early cinematic promotion.
