This rare and visually dynamic poster was issued in 1922 to promote the operetta Min son på galejan (My Son on the Galleon), staged at Folkteatern in Gothenburg. The production was based on the celebrated 18th-century travel memoir by Swedish naval officer Jacob Wallenberg. For this adaptation, socialist writer and poet Ture Nerman penned the libretto, with original music composed by Knut Bonde.
The Cubist-influenced artwork was created by Jon-And, the professional name of John Andersson (1889–1941), a prominent Swedish illustrator and graphic designer known for his modernist style and expressive use of color and form. Active in the early 20th century, Jon-And produced a wide range of commercial art, posters, and book illustrations, often bringing a bold, avant-garde sensibility to Swedish visual culture.
The poster’s composition combines nautical and exotic motifs to reflect the operetta’s adventurous tone, with imagery of sailing ships, Eastern architecture, and stylized sailors in motion. Rich red, yellow, and blue hues remain strong and eye-catching.
Condition: Very good. Bright, fresh colors with only light signs of age. Small tear at bottom; minor margin wear.
A striking and culturally significant work of Swedish poster art.
