Railroad Ski / Sports Travel |
Cheerful and modernist winter sports poster issued by the Finnish State Railways to promote travel to Finland’s ski resorts during the postwar tourism boom. Designed by Rolf Christianson, one of Finland’s leading graphic artists of the mid-20th century, the poster depicts a smiling family arriving for a skiing holiday, skis and poles in hand, with a train steaming in the background.
The playful, stylized figures capture the optimism and affluence of Europe’s growing middle class in the postwar years, when skiing became an increasingly popular leisure pursuit. Christianson, who began his career at Tilgmann’s publishing house and later designed official certificates for the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games, brings a lively and accessible style that balances humor with bold graphic clarity.
A hard-to-find poster and an excellent example of postwar Finnish travel advertising.
Condition: Very good. Mounted on linen. Bright, vivid colors preserved. Minor age-related wear, very well cared for. A rare survival.
