A wonderful and very rare original vintage travel poster, issued in 1932 by the Swedish Tourist Association (Svenska Turistföreningen, STF) to encourage travel and exploration of Sweden. Founded in 1885 by scientists at Uppsala University, the STF played a central role in promoting access to the Swedish mountains and natural landscapes.
The poster was designed by Josef David Ossian Elgström, a Swedish illustrator and writer, and features a striking modernist design in bold red, blue, and black. A stylized railway track winds through the composition, with a steam train traveling across the bottom, symbolizing discovery and adventure within Sweden. The bold typography urges: “Känn Ditt Land” (Know Your Country).
Now over 90 years old, the poster is in good condition for its age, with visible patina, small tears, crumbling, water stains, and light dirt — all consistent with its long history and adding to its vintage charm. Despite the wear, the image remains powerful and vibrant.
A rare survivor of Scandinavian travel advertising, this poster would look stunning when framed and is a must-have for collectors of Nordic design, early 20th-century travel ephemera, or STF history.
