A beautiful and highly atmospheric original vintage Italian travel poster designed by Alfredo Lalia and issued in 1951 by Ente Nazionale Italiano per il Turismo (ENIT) together with Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS).
The design is wonderfully minimalist and elegant, featuring a large umbrella sheltering bright oranges and an orange blossom while delicate snowflakes fall from a dark winter sky above. The imagery cleverly contrasts the cold northern winter with the warmth and sunshine of Italy, promoting the country as a welcoming winter destination. The fresh citrus fruit, long associated with southern Italy and the Mediterranean climate, adds both color and symbolism to the composition.
This poster is an excellent example of postwar Italian graphic design, where simple forms and refined color palettes created visually striking and memorable travel advertisements. Alfredo Lalia’s modernist approach gives the poster a timeless quality that remains highly appealing today.
Issued during the golden age of European rail and leisure travel, the poster encouraged travelers to escape winter conditions elsewhere in Europe and enjoy Italy’s milder climate, landscapes, and culture. Mounted on linen. Some foxing at the bottom.
