This vibrant original vintage travel poster for British West Indian Airways promotes Grenada as part of its Caribbean network and is commonly attributed to the Italian-born designer Aldo Cosomati, dating to around 1958.
The design is a striking example of mid-century modern graphic style, rendered in bold silkscreen printing with flat, saturated color. Set against a deep blue background, two stylized figures—one seated and one playing a drum—evoke rhythm, movement, and Caribbean musical culture. Their angular, almost abstract forms reflect the modernist aesthetic of the period, while the simplified shapes and vivid palette give the poster a strong decorative presence. A small airplane silhouette in the background subtly reinforces the theme of air travel, connecting the cultural imagery with BWIA’s expanding international routes.
BWIA, known as “The Airline of the Caribbean,” played a central role in connecting the islands with Europe and North America during the postwar travel boom, and posters like this were key in promoting the region as an exotic and vibrant destination.
Printed as a silkscreen, the poster benefits from rich, opaque colors and crisp definition, characteristic of high-quality production techniques of the era. Although unsigned, the design is widely attributed to Aldo Cosomati and fits within his recognizable graphic language.
Condition: Minor creasing at the edges, otherwise in very good condition with strong colors and excellent overall presentation.
A bold and highly decorative Caribbean travel poster, appealing to collectors of airline memorabilia, mid-century design, and tropical destination advertising.
