A beautiful and atmospheric original vintage travel poster promoting Scandinavian Airlines System flights to Japan, designed by the artist Netzler and printed in Sweden in 1953.
The composition masterfully blends traditional Japanese imagery with the elegant visual language of mid-century airline advertising. Two figures in traditional dress and straw hats guide a wooden raft across calm reflective waters using long bamboo poles, while delicate cherry blossoms frame the scene. In the distance rises the snow-covered peak of Mount Fuji, one of Japan’s most iconic national symbols.
Above the tranquil landscape, an SAS aircraft flies across the composition, symbolizing the growing reach of international air travel in the postwar era. The soft muted background pattern evokes Japanese decorative design traditions, while the bold red “Japan” title creates a striking modern graphic contrast characteristic of 1950s Scandinavian travel posters.
This poster beautifully captures the fascination with long-distance exotic travel during the golden age of propeller-driven international aviation, when routes to Asia represented some of the most glamorous journeys available.
