A magnificent early twentieth-century cruise poster promoting summer voyages to Norway, Spitsbergen, and the Baltic aboard the P&O steam yacht Vectis, issued around 1910 by the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company.
The dramatic scene captures passengers boarding from a tender in Arctic waters beneath the midnight sun, surrounded by floating ice, seabirds, and distant mountains of Spitsbergen. The image beautifully evokes the romance and adventure of early luxury expedition cruising to the far north during the golden age of steamship travel. Particularly striking is the atmospheric depiction of the Arctic light and the elegant combination of illustration and decorative typography.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, cruises to Norway and Spitsbergen represented some of the most exclusive and adventurous journeys available to wealthy travelers. These voyages combined scenic Norwegian fjords, Arctic wildlife, and the extraordinary experience of the midnight sun at the edge of the polar regions. Spitsbergen — now commonly known as part of Svalbard — had become an increasingly fashionable destination for expedition-style tourism before the First World War.
Printed circa 1910.
