Railroad |
This original vintage railway poster, issued in 1946, was designed by renowned Dutch graphic artist Fedde Weidema (1915–1999) for the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (Dutch Railways). It promotes the Scandinavië Amsterdam–Kopenhagen Express, an international express train linking Amsterdam with Copenhagen and providing a key rail connection between the Netherlands and Scandinavia in the years immediately following World War II.
The striking modernist design features the NS emblem radiating as a stylized compass rose, symbolizing direction, speed, and renewed international travel. The word "Scandinavië"—Dutch for Scandinavia—emphasizes the route's northern destination, while the bold typography and geometric composition are characteristic of Weidema's distinctive postwar graphic style.
Today, the poster is regarded as an excellent example of Dutch railway advertising from the late 1940s, capturing the optimism and growing importance of international rail travel across Europe.
Condition: Good condition with age wear, pinholes, light creasing, and other minor signs of use.
