SAS - North America

This original SAS North America travel poster from the 1960s, designed by Otto Nielsen (1916–2000), promotes flights to North America with Scandinavian Airlines.

Nielsen depicts a magnificent American bison silhouetted against a vast, luminous sky, evoking the open plains and wilderness of North America. A small SAS jet aircraft crosses the sky above, linking the dramatic landscape directly with modern air travel. Nielsen frequently incorporated an aircraft into his destination posters, often making it a small but important element of the composition.

The expressive brushwork and atmospheric shades of blue, green and yellow contrast beautifully with the dark, powerful form of the bison. Together with the distinctive period SAS typography and winged Viking emblem, the design is a fine example of mid-century Scandinavian airline advertising and Otto Nielsen's highly recognizable painterly style.
