This original vintage Southern Rhodesia pictorial map from 1945 was designed by Arthur William Baylis. Titled "A Pictorial Map of Southern Rhodesia", it presents the country in a wonderfully detailed and decorative illustrated form, combining geography with numerous colorful miniature scenes depicting towns, wildlife, agriculture, mining, transport and other features of the territory.
The elaborate composition is framed by an ornamental border and includes the Southern Rhodesian coat of arms at lower left. At upper right, the classical figure of Boreas, the god of the north wind, blows across the map, while a large rising sun and decorative map key complete the design. The many small illustrations invite the viewer to explore the different regions and attractions of Southern Rhodesia, present-day Zimbabwe.
