This is a stunning and rare original vintage poster issued by Swedish Lloyd, likely from 1929, marking the introduction of their new steamers, S/S Suecia and S/S Britannia, into service.
The poster features a striking graphic of three funnels and three flags, symbolizing the key cities along the Swedish Lloyd liner route: Paris, London, and Gothenburg. Swedish Lloyd, originally known as Ångfartygs AB Svenska Lloyd, was founded in Gothenburg on May 10, 1869. The 1920s were a challenging period for the company, but a significant milestone was the acquisition of the S/S Suecia and S/S Britannia from the Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson shipyard in Newcastle. These vessels entered the London line in June 1929, heralding a new era for the company.
The poster is in good condition, with restored tears along the left edge extending into the image, minor overpainting on repaired sections, and small losses, including at the upper left text. Despite some age-related wear and creases, this is a rare and highly sought-after piece of Swedish maritime history.
