This is an original vintage Danish political poster with the slogan: "Make South Schleswig free!"
The poster prominently displays a *Dannebrog* pennant (the Danish flag) held by two blue lions adorned with yellow crowns and red tongues, symbolizing Danish pride and strength. Below the image is the bold text: *Sydslesvig free!*
The poster references the historical struggle in the Denmark-Germany border region, where Danish and German interests have conflicted over many decades. The pressure on Danish culture in South Schleswig was particularly intense during the 12 years of Nazi rule. However, after the end of World War II, May 5, 1945, also brought a sense of liberation to South Schleswig. For the first time since 1864, the Danish community in the region had the freedom to promote and develop their cultural identity.
Despite its historical significance, the poster has several flaws, including missing paper at the top, rugged margins, foxing, and fold marks. Nonetheless, it remains a rare and meaningful artifact of Denmarkâs post-war political efforts.
