A striking and highly imaginative original vintage travel poster for Sicily, issued in 1953 by the regional tourism authority Assessorato Turismo e Spettacolo – Regione Siciliana and designed by the celebrated Italian poster artist Mario Puppo.
Puppo created one of the most distinctive and modern Italian travel poster styles of the postwar era, blending surrealism, abstraction, and graphic elegance. Here, Sicily is symbolized through a whimsical anthropomorphic cactus figure floating above the landscape, with Mount Etna visible in the distance. The composition combines humor, fantasy, and sophisticated design, making the poster instantly recognizable as one of Puppo’s memorable tourism works from the 1950s.
The bold typography and soft atmospheric colors perfectly capture the optimism and modern visual language of postwar Italian tourism promotion. Posters by Mario Puppo are increasingly sought after for their artistic quality and originality, particularly those created for the Italian regions and ENIT tourism campaigns.
Issued by Assessorato Turismo e Spettacolo – Regione Siciliana in 1953.
