This striking original poster announces the Swedish National Winter Games (“SM Vinterspelen”) held in Kiruna from 13–21 March 1948. Kiruna, located far north of the Arctic Circle, has long been associated with winter sports thanks to its long, reliable snow season and dramatic Arctic landscape.
Research in the Swedish National Library’s newspaper archives indicates that this poster was mentioned in contemporary press coverage in 1948, including in Söderhamns Tidning and Norrskensflamman. It was reportedly created in four colours by a student at the Kiruna gymnasium named Falk, making it an unusual and highly local production rather than a large commercial commission.
The design is a fine example of late-1940s Scandinavian modernism, combining bold typography with a simplified, almost geometric depiction of a ski jumper in motion. The stark contrasts of snow, mountain forms, and the solitary winter tree evoke the Arctic setting, while the restricted palette reflects both stylistic trends and practical printing methods of the time. The poster was produced as a lithographic print, a technique widely used for posters in this period, allowing for strong colour fields and clean graphic lines.
As a piece of sports and regional history, it captures a moment when Kiruna—granted city status in 1948—was asserting itself as a national winter sports destination. Its documented origin, student designer, and limited production contribute significantly to its rarity.
Condition: Some age wear, with tears and minor crumbling consistent with use and age. Very rare survivor.
