This charming and highly decorative vintage travel poster promotes Denmark as “A Paradise for Motorists,” a theme that reflects the postwar boom in car travel and the growing appeal of leisurely road trips through the Danish countryside. Designed by Viggo Vagnby and issued in 1958 by the National Travel Association of Denmark, the poster captures a warm, inviting vision of rural life and accessibility.
At the center is a traditional Danish inn nestled beneath an enormous, stylized tree, its canopy dotted with colorful abstract leaves. A group of fashionable travelers gathers outside, suggesting hospitality and sociability, while a bright red car parked nearby reinforces the message of Denmark as an ideal destination for motorists.
Vagnby’s design is a fine example of mid-century Scandinavian graphic style, combining simplified forms, a playful use of color, and a harmonious composition. The exaggerated scale of the tree and the stylized figures give the poster a whimsical, almost storybook quality, while still effectively conveying its promotional message.
Condition: Tiny tears and minimal creasing at the edges, a small loss in the top right corner, and minor staining in the bottom left corner. Overall, it remains a very attractive and well-preserved example that would display beautifully when framed.
