The New Zealand Shipping Company Limited was incorporated in 1873 in Christchurch, New Zealand. The poster depicts a Maori chief with tattoos, and the sailing routes through the Panama Canal to New Zealand and Australia. The route was operated by modern well appointed passenger steamers offering 1st, 2nd and 3rd class.
The artist Henry George Gawthorn was born in Northampton in 1879 and he went on from here to become one of Britain’s most stylish railway poster artists. Mr Gawthorn sometimes appears in his own posters but this is not the case in this poster. This is a very rare New Zealand poster.
The poster has some wear, dirt and foxing, but would look great framed
