The Riddle of the Sphinx (German: Das Rätsel der Sphinx) is directed by Adolf Gärtner and starring Ellen Richter, Erich Kaiser-Titz and Karl Günther. The film's sets were designed by the art director Hans Dreier.
The riddle of the sphinx is an episode from the Oedipus saga of Greek mythology. The besieged Sphinx the city of Thebes , and gave the Thebans over next riddle on. Anyone who answered incorrectly was eaten. Only Oedipus (Osiris) could escape her.
The riddle was: "What walks on four feet in the morning, two in the afternoon and three at night?". Oedipus answered: "Man: as an infant, he crawls on all fours; as an adult, he walks on two legs and; in old age, he uses a walking stick".
