SAS-turisten

This original vintage Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) travel poster from the 1950s, designed by Fritjof Pedersen, promotes affordable air travel. The Swedish slogan "ett jättesteg i rätt riktning" translates to "a giant step in the right direction," while "SAS-turisten för billigare flygresor" means "SAS tourists for cheaper flights."

The design features a surreal, stylized human figure composed of travel-related elements. The head is depicted as a yellow globe with black longitude and latitude lines, symbolizing global travel. The torso resembles the fuselage of an airplane, reinforcing the aviation theme. The figure's legs are long and exaggerated, clad in red plaid trousers, suggesting movement and a dynamic step forward. A red camera bag hangs from a strap around the figure’s neck, emphasizing tourism. A small red hat and Scandinavian flags, representing Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, appear at the figure’s neck, highlighting SAS’s identity as the leading airline of the region.

The background consists of a blue sky and stylized clouds, creating a sense of flight and adventure. The SAS airline logo is positioned in the lower left corner, enhancing brand recognition.  It is an excellent example of 1950s Scandinavian graphic design, appealing to collectors of vintage travel memorabilia, aviation history, and modernist art.

This mid-century travel poster is in decent condition, showing some signs of wear, including tears, rough margins, scratches, and general aging. It has been professionally mounted on linen with an acid-free barrier for preservation and would look great framed.
