This original vintage Swedish theater poster promotes the 1943 touring production of "Gustav Vasa," a grand national drama by August Strindberg. Presented in Folkets Park, this play celebrates Sweden's historical hero, King Gustav Vasa, who led the country to independence from Denmark in the 16th century. Directed by Sandro Malmquist and Nils Ekstam, the production featured a large ensemble of 22 actors, with Nils Ekstam starring as King Gustav.
At the bottom left, the poster features an excerpt from a poem by Carl Snoilsky (1841–1903), a celebrated Swedish poet known for his historical and patriotic works. The poem pays tribute to King Gustav Vasa’s role in liberating Sweden from Danish rule:
"Vi läsa om Konung Gösta i Krönikebok
Guds under man vilken bräckte tyrannernas ok.
I häret han grep de trofasta vid avgrundens rand
och mot deras vilja gav dem ett fädernesland..."
("We read of King Gösta in the Chronicle book
God’s miracle, who broke the tyrants' yoke.
In distress, he seized the faithful
from the edge of the abyss,
and against their will,
gave them a fatherland…")
In almost good condition with some signs of age-related wear, including small tears and creases along the edges. Would look fantastic framed!
