This is an authentic 1935 Swedish movie poster for the Russian satirical film Poruchik Kizhe (Lieutenant Kijé), released in Sweden under the title Löjtnant Gogol. The story, adapted from Yuri Tynyanov’s satirical novella, follows the absurd “life” of a nonexistent officer whose entire career — exile, promotion, marriage, and service — unfolds due to a clerical error in a royal decree.
The poster was designed by Gunnar Håkansson, a Swedish graphic artist known for his bold, modernist style. His composition for Löjtnant Gogol is striking and surreal: ghostly silhouettes, sharp geometric shapes, and dynamic use of red, blue, and white capture the farcical and satirical tone of the film.
Starring Alexandr Fajncimmer, the film is a classic of Russian satire, and posters from its Scandinavian release are extremely scarce.
Now nearly 90 years old, the poster remains in very good condition, with only minor signs of wear consistent with age. It would make a stunning framed centerpiece and is a rare treasure for collectors of Swedish poster art, Russian cinema history, and early 20th-century satire.
