Ocean Liner |
This striking pre-war travel poster was designed by Albert Fuss in 1937 to promote luxury “Northern Cruises” operated by Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft (HAPAG) and Norddeutscher Lloyd. It advertises summer voyages departing from Hamburg or Bremen during June, July, and August, inviting travelers to experience the dramatic landscapes of the far north.
The imagery captures the allure of these expeditions: towering ice formations glowing under the midnight sun, a calm Arctic sea dotted with floes, and a sleek ocean liner cruising through remote waters. In the foreground, figures in polar attire reinforce the sense of adventure and exclusivity associated with such journeys. These cruises were among the most prestigious leisure voyages of their time, combining comfort aboard modern liners with the excitement of exploration.
The routes typically followed the Norwegian coast—famed for its fjords and coastal scenery—before continuing far into the Arctic Circle toward Svalbard. At their furthest point, ships would approach the pack ice, often referred to as the “ice edge,” offering passengers rare views of glaciers, drifting ice fields, and Arctic wildlife. These voyages were carefully timed to take advantage of the long daylight hours of the polar summer, when the midnight sun created extraordinary atmospheric effects like the glowing halo depicted in the poster.
As both an artistic and historical document, the poster reflects a golden age of cruise travel when northern exploration was marketed as an elegant and accessible experience for affluent tourists. The condition is excellent, with strong colors and visual impact that make it particularly desirable for collectors.
