Ocean Liner Travel |
A striking original authentic vintage travel poster issued in 1952 by Det Forenede Dampskibs-Selskab (DFDS), designed by the master poster artist Aage Rasmussen. The poster promotes DFDS ferry connections from Oslo southward to Copenhagen and Frederikshavn, illustrated through a bold and highly graphic map design with elegant passenger ships crossing Scandinavian waters.
The composition is a superb example of postwar Scandinavian commercial design, combining clarity, modernism, and strong visual impact. Rasmussen uses simplified geography, bright route markers, and stylized ocean liners to create a clean and memorable advertisement for Nordic sea travel during the golden age of passenger shipping.
Founded in 1866, DFDS became one of the most important ferry and shipping operators in Northern Europe, connecting Scandinavia with continental Europe and the United Kingdom. Routes such as Oslo–Copenhagen and Oslo–Frederikshavn were essential travel links in the years before widespread commercial air travel, offering comfortable overnight journeys aboard elegant passenger ferries.
This rare poster has excellent color and strong decorative appeal, particularly attractive for collectors of Scandinavian travel, maritime history, and mid-century design. Mounted on linen and in excellent condition.
