Original 1949 Norwegian parliamentary election poster urging rural voters (bygdefolk) to rally behind the Bondepartiet. The bold design features a mountain peak with a blazing beacon, its flame forming the word “Bygdefolk”. Below, the rallying call reads:
“Splittet vil vi aldri oppnå likestilling med de andre – samlet vil vi alltid ha et avgjørende ord i Norges Storting. Det hele beror på oss selv! Stem med Bondepartiet.”
(“Divided we will never achieve equality with the others – united we will always have a decisive word in the Norwegian Parliament. It all depends on us! Vote for the Farmers’ Party.”)
Historical context:
In the 1949 elections, Bondepartiet emphasized unity among rural voters in the face of the dominant Labour Party. While the Labour Party secured 85 of 150 seats, Bondepartiet received 4.9% of the vote, continuing to play a symbolic role as the voice of Norway’s countryside.
This striking poster combines sharp modernist typography with patriotic rural imagery, a classic example of postwar political propaganda art in Norway.
