Zermatt famed as a mountaineering and ski resort of the Swiss Alps. Edward Whymper made eight attempts on the Matterhorn before succeeding on July 14, 1865. The descent was struck by tragedy when two climber were killed. The Matterhorn tragedy haunted Whymper until his death in 1911.
There is a Whymper qoute printed on the poster in Danish: "The world was at our feet, and the Matterhorn was conquered. The old traditions are true, - there are spirits on the top of the Matterhorn!"
This rare and old travel poster printed in Danish text must be very rare. In the National Library in Switzerland, you find references to this héliographie poster being printed in the 1920's. A very modern technique for the time. I don’t think you find many of its kind. Ready to be framed.
