This is a stunning and rare authentic original vintage poster issued by The Alaska Steamship Company. The Alaska Steamship Company operated passenger service from Seattle to all ports in Alaska from 1895 until 1954.
During World War II, the government took over the company's ships. When the war ended, the company struggled to compete with the new Alaska Highway for passengers and freight. It discontinued passenger service altogether in 1954 and shut down operations in 1971.
The poster designed by Sydney Mortimer Laurence depicts a Alaska Steamship with its yellow and black funnel inside an Alaskan Fjord surrounded by steep peaking mountains.
Sydney Mortimer Laurence is famed for his dramatic landscape paintings of Alaska, as well as his role as one of the first professionally trained artists to live in the Territory.
Text at bottom: "Along Alaska's Sheltered Seas".
In very good condition. Light age wear. Mounted on linen.
