Flygande Holländaren 1: Levende fordømt (The Living Damned)

This original antique Swedish film poster advertises Flygande Holländaren (The Flying Dutchman), the Danish silent-film production directed by Emanuel Gregers and based on the famous maritime novel by Frederick Marryat.

Originally released in Denmark in 1920, the ambitious production was presented as a multi-part serial. This Swedish poster was produced for the film's later release by Svenska Filmkompaniet and dates from 1922, making it an evocative survivor from the early years of Scandinavian cinema.

The dramatic artwork is particularly striking. A sailing ship battles through a dark and turbulent sea beneath enormous blood-red sails, creating an ominous image perfectly suited to the supernatural legend of the Flying Dutchman. The limited palette of intense red, black and blue-green gives the poster an exceptionally powerful graphic quality characteristic of early silent-film advertising.

The Swedish text describes the production as an “äventyrsfilm i fyra avdelningar och sexton akter” – an adventure film in four parts and sixteen acts – after Frederick Marryat's celebrated novel. The poster also prominently credits director Emanuel Gregers and Svenska Filmkompaniet.

Dating from 1922, this is now more than a century old and represents an exceptional piece of Scandinavian silent-film and maritime poster history. Its combination of a ghostly sailing ship, dramatic typography and bold early graphic design makes it particularly appealing to collectors of antique movie posters, nautical imagery and Scandinavian cinema.
