This original Austrian travel poster from 1935 promotes Altaussee in Styria (Steiermark), in Austria's beautiful Salzkammergut region. According to the Austrian National Library, the poster was issued in 1935 by Österreichische Verkehrswerbung, the Austrian national tourism publicity organization.
The poster features a magnificent panoramic photograph looking across Lake Altaussee (Altausseer See) and the village of Altaussee, with its distinctive church and traditional houses gathered along the lakeshore. Beyond the village, the landscape rises dramatically toward the mountains and glaciers of the surrounding Austrian Alps.
The photograph is credited on the poster to Brüder Lenz, Dobl bei Graz. The warm monochrome photographic image is combined with bold red AUSTRIA typography, producing a striking and remarkably modern design for the mid-1930s.
Published by Österreichische Verkehrswerbung – Werbedienst des Bundesministeriums für Handel und Verkehr, Wien – the poster is a fine example of pre-war Austrian tourism advertising, presenting the lakes, mountains and traditional Alpine scenery of the Salzkammergut to an international audience.
A beautiful and atmospheric 1935 Austria travel poster, and an excellent early photographic tourism poster from the Salzkammergut.
