This striking original vintage travel poster features a stylized, modernist depiction of a Swiss Guard in full ceremonial attire, standing in front of the Vatican in Rome. The guard is drawn with sharp geometric shapes and vibrant contrasting colors — white, orange, yellow, and black — under a brilliant blue background. Behind him, you can faintly see the iconic dome of St. Peter’s Basilica.
The text reads “ROME” in bold white letters at the top, and below: “Voyagez par AER LINGUS – LIGNES AÉRIENNES IRLANDAISES” in yellow-gold.
Piet Sluis, a Dutch graphic designer who moved to Ireland in the 1950s, created this piece to promote Aer Lingus flights to Rome. The Swiss Guard, known as the smallest and oldest army in the world, symbolizes the Vatican and adds a unique touch of local culture to the poster. Aer Lingus, founded in 1936, was expanding its European routes at this time, and posters like this targeted the French-speaking market.
The poster is in excellent condition with vibrant colors. Ready to frame and display.
