This is a stunning, authentic original vintage poster from the 1920s titled "Edinburgh - The Royal Mile," designed by William Barnes Wollen. Wollen, an English painter, is renowned for his paintings of battle scenes, historical events, and sporting activities.
The poster depicts Mary, Queen of Scots, in a procession along the Royal Mile with St. Giles' Cathedral in the background. Mary held the crowns of England, France, Ireland, and Scotland at different points in her life.
The Royal Mile is a historic sequence of streets forming the main thoroughfare of Edinburgh's Old Town. The term was first used descriptively in W. M. Gilbert's *Edinburgh in the Nineteenth Century* (1901), describing the city "with its Castle and Palace and the royal mile between."
This poster is mounted on linen. It has pinholes in the corners, light age wear, and vibrant colors.
