This stunning and rare original vintage Alaska travel and steamship poster was issued by the Alaska Steamship Company and features artwork by Sydney Mortimer Laurence, the celebrated American landscape painter best known for his magnificent depictions of Alaska's wilderness.
The beautiful illustration depicts an Alaska Steamship Company passenger vessel, with its distinctive yellow and black funnel, sailing through a peaceful Alaskan fjord surrounded by towering mountains and steep cliffs. Snow-covered peaks glow in the soft evening light, while the calm waters reflect the dramatic colors of the sky. The slogan "This is Alaska" appears in bold lettering above the scene, with "Along Alaska's Sheltered Seas" printed at the bottom.
Sydney Mortimer Laurence was one of the first professionally trained artists to settle in Alaska and became particularly famous for his atmospheric paintings of the territory's mountains, glaciers and wilderness. His romantic treatment of the Alaskan landscape makes this poster an outstanding example of early American travel advertising.
The Alaska Steamship Company, founded in 1895, operated passenger and freight services between Seattle and ports throughout Alaska. During World War II, many of its vessels were requisitioned for military service. After the war, competition from air travel and the Alaska Highway contributed to declining passenger traffic. The company discontinued passenger service in 1954 and ceased operations in 1971.
A rare and highly decorative original Alaska Steamship Company poster, combining the romance of ocean travel with the spectacular natural beauty of Alaska. A wonderful collector's piece for enthusiasts of vintage travel posters, maritime history and American landscape art.
Professionally mounted on linen and in very good condition, with light overall age wear.
